As a result of liberalization in economic activities, 1980 was a turning point, not only for the development of Turkish economy, but also for the iron and steel industry. During 1980s, Turkish iron and steel industry has shown a great progress parallel with the establishment of the electric arc furnace mills and developments in the economic structure. In July 1996, Turkey signed an agreement with the European Coal and Steel Communities (ECSC) to abolish customs duties on bilateral steel trade. In accordance with the agreement, iron and steel products are freely traded between EU and Turkey. Today, with its integrated plants that have capacities changing from 1 million tons up to 3 million tons and with 16 electrical arc furnaces whose capacities ranging from 400.000 tons up to 2 million tons; iron & steel industry has become one of the most developed sectors of Turkey that make significant contributions to the Turkish economy. Turkey 's raw steel production has been increasing continuously since 1981, performing the highest development among steel producing countries and from 1990 onwards, the foundry production of Turkey has shown a steady increasing trend due to modernization and capacity improvement investments. Today, Turkish Iron and Steel Industry has become the 12 th in the world steel production and is among the top five in Europe. Because of increase in the domestic demand, the iron and steel production of Turkey has increased by 11,9% (compared to the production of 2003) and reached to 20.478 million tons in 2004. Long-steel products ranked first with 17.084 million tons or 83%. On the other hand, 3.03 million tons of the raw steel production was directed to flat products, while the remaining 362 thousands tons was to special steel products. On the other hand, Finished steel consumption of Turkey rose by 12.1% in 2004, and recorded as 224 kg which is even much smaller than developed countries. EXPORTS The Turkish steel industry is largely dependent on foreign trade. Turkey is among the biggest exporters in the world. Also, Iron and Steel Industry is the third largest exporting sector in the Turkish economy and becoming one of the major driving forces among Turkish total exports. In 2004 Turkish steel industry exports reached to US$ 7.8 billion and 14,9 million tons which corresponded 12,5 % of Turkey's total exports. Main iron and steel products of Turkey includes: long products containing wire rod, bars, sections, wire and nail, flat products, pipes and pipe fittings, forged steel, cooking appliances and cast articles of iron & steel. In 2004, steel products were exported to more than 200 countries in the world. In the same year, major markets for Turkish steel exports were USA, UAE and Italy. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
